The existing diesel heating system on MS Helvetia needed to be replaced. At the same time, there was another problem on board: the front and upper areas of the vessel were often too warm, while the rear remained too cold. Simply replacing the heat generator would not have solved this. We therefore considered heat generation, distribution and controls as one system and developed a new concept for the vessel. A Buderus Logano plus GB125 with 50 kW heating output was installed as the new heat generator.
We divided MS Helvetia into three independently controlled heating zones, each with its own room sensor. This allows heat to be regulated according to demand where it is actually needed. In the cooler central area, we added four fan convectors that can quickly deliver substantial heating output to the entrance area, particularly when doors are open. The installation itself was also unusual: bringing in and positioning the new heating system was coordinated with Zürichsee-Schifffahrtsgesellschaft. Supports, fixings and working methods were adapted to the specific requirements of shipbuilding. An unusual request and an unusual job site – which is exactly why this project remains particularly memorable for us.
In Zumikon, we replaced the existing heat pump with the appropriate NIBE successor model. The new unit had to continue providing heating, domestic hot water and cooling from a very small plinth – and we also brought the faulty wine-cooling unit back into operation.
