Heating Replacement for a Family Home – A Simple Route to a Heat Pump
In a typical family-home neighbourhood in Dübendorf, we replace existing oil and gas heating systems with properly sized air-to-water heat pumps and coordinate the entire project.

The starting point was an existing gas heating system with annual energy consumption of around 1,000,000 kWh. In a feasibility study, we assessed different options for replacing the heat generation system. Air-to-water heat pumps were ruled out because of the required output of around 500 kW and the location in a residential area. Boreholes were not feasible due to the geological conditions, and a groundwater solution was not possible either. A pellet heating system emerged as the appropriate renewable solution.

The new plant consists of two ETA ePE-K 240 boilers with a total output of 480 kW and around 14,000 litres of buffer storage. Pellets are extracted using a so-called pellet mole, which moves across the surface of the pellet stock, draws pellets in from above and conveys them to the boilers through the suction line. We developed the plant and room concept, prepared the building permit application and managed the entire approval process, including coordination with the heritage authorities, through to completion. We also applied for and secured the available subsidies. The system has been operating reliably since January 2026.

Two Fröling wood-chip boilers with outputs of 150 and 60 kW supply houses and apartment buildings in Freudwil through a private district heating network. We installed the central plant, substations and complete connections for the individual heat consumers.
